Difficult conversations
Say no clearly without overexplaining
Decline the request without turning your private reasons into a case someone can cross-examine.
A complete no can still be kind
Start with the answer. A long preface can sound negotiable and increase anxiety for both people. Add one sentence of context only if you want to.
Offer an alternative only when you genuinely want to provide it. An unwanted compromise is not kinder than a clear boundary.
Three ways the words can begin
01“I cannot take this on. Please plan without me for this one.”
02“Thank you for asking, but I am not available. I hope it goes well.”
03“I can help for thirty minutes on Tuesday, but I cannot own the project or extend that time.”
Do I need a reason?
No. Context can help in some relationships, but your reason does not need to be persuasive enough for the other person to approve.
What if they ask again?
Repeat the answer with fewer words. New explanations often create new points to negotiate.
