Goodbyes and closure
Write a closure letter after a breakup
Stop waiting for one perfect explanation to make every part of the ending feel resolved.
Closure can be a decision, not an answer
Some endings leave facts unknown or feelings unmatched. A closure letter can name what you know, what you will stop pursuing, and what you are taking forward.
Write the boundary in present tense. “I am no longer checking” or “I am choosing no contact” gives the letter a real ending.
Three ways the words can begin
01“I kept treating your explanation as a puzzle that would eventually stop hurting. I am choosing to stop solving it.”
02“The relationship ended, but my habits around it continued. This letter marks the point where I begin changing those habits.”
03“I can appreciate what was good without using it as evidence that we should return to what was not working.”
Should I send a closure letter?
This tool is for a letter you do not send. If practical communication is required, write a separate brief message with a clear present-day purpose.
What if I still want them back?
Write that honestly, then distinguish the wish from the evidence that reconnecting would be healthy and mutual.
